Vortrag, gehalten auf der 80. Naturforscher-Versammlung zu Köln am 21. September 1908. Mit dem Bildnis Hermann Minkowski sowie einem Vorwort von A. Gutzmer. Leipzig und Berlin : B. G. Teubner, 1909. First separate edition, being an offprint from: Jahresbericht der Deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung, Band 18. Quarto (260 x 180 mm), original printed textured wrappers, stitch-bound, photographic frontispiece plate, pp. [3], 14, [1 publisher’s advertisement for Minkowski’s Geometrie der Zahlen]; a very fine copy.

‘In this paper, Space and Time, read by Minkowski in Cologne only a few months before his death, he introduced the notion that made possible the expansion of the relativity theory of Einstein from its specific to its general form. The technical description of Minkowski’s hypothesis is the four-dimensional space-time continuum … Minkowski maintained that the separation of time and space is a false conception; that time is itself a dimension, comparable to length, breadth and height; and that therefore the true conception of reality was constituted by a space-time continuum possessing these four dimensions….’ PMM 401.

[TOGETHER WITH]

Einstein, Albert (1879-1955). Neue Möglichkeit für eine einheitliche Feldtheorie von Gravitation und Elektrizität. Sonderabdruck aus den Sitzungsberichten der Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Phys.-Math. Klasse 1928. XVIII. Berlin : Verlag der Akademie, 1928. First edition. Special ‘offprint’ with separate pagination. Quarto (255 x 180 mm), original printed orange wrappers; pp. 6; a very fine copy. Weil 162. Einstein’s important second publication on the problem of the unified field theory of gravity and electricity is one of the ‘four further papers’ cited in the entry for Einheitliche Feldtheorie von Gravitation und Elektrizität (1925), PMM 416.

[AND]

Planck, Max (1858-1947). Über die Potentialdifferenz verdünnter Lösungen, pp. 9-11 in: Sitzungsberichte der Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Phys.-Math. Klasse 1929, I. II. Berlin : Verlag der Akademie, 1929. ‘Zweite Mitteilung’. Quarto (265 x 85 mm), original printed green wrappers (sunned at edges), pp. 11, a fine copy, partly unopened. Planck continues his analysis, first published in the same journal in 1927, of the fundamental difference between the formulas created by him and by Henderson for the size of the potential difference between two infinitely diluted solutions.

The three works described above are housed together in a custom clamshell box.
