Albumen print photograph with hand colouring, in carte de visite format, 101 x 62 mm (mount); verso imprinted ‘Melbourne & Sydney Photographic Company, 19 Collins St., East, nearly opposite the Bank of Victoria, Melbourne’, with a contemporary caption in ink, identifying the sitter: ‘Annie Deutsch’, and below it another, in pencil: ‘Jones’; the print and mount are both in very good condition.

English-born professional photographer Henry Jones was manager of the Melbourne & Sydney Photographic Company for a brief time in the mid 1860s. He left Melbourne for Adelaide in 1866, where he worked for both Duryea and Goode before setting up his own business in that city.

It is possible that Annie Deutsch was a relation of Herman Deutsch, the engraver and lithographer who was a prominent member of the Ballarat Hebrew Congregation.
