JONES, Henry
Studio portrait of three generations of the same family. Adelaide, South Australia, mid 1870s.
Albumen print photograph, carte de visite format, 105 x 62 mm (mount); verso with imprint of ‘H. Jones, Photographer. Opposite White’s Rooms, King William Street, Adelaide / Awarded Society of Arts Prize for Portraits of Children’; both print and mount are in fine condition.
The woman at centre is probably only in her 40s, although she looks older; she holds the hand of her daughter, who is about eight or nine years old, and her other arm is around her father, whose hand is placed on her shoulder. The child’s father was probably deceased.
Henry Jones mentioned his Society of Arts Prize for Portraits of Children in newspaper advertisements during the second half of 1876. From February 1877, his advertisements (and presumably carte de visite back mark) added the patronage statement ‘Photographer to His Excellency the Governor’.
