Traduit de l’Anglois, par M. de Freville. Paris : Chez Saillant & Nyon, 1772. Octavo, fine modern binding of quarter calf over marbled papered boards, spine with raised bands, gilt ornament and gilt lettered leather title label, binding firm, pp. xvi, 362, [3], contents with occasional mild foxing or browning but generally clean and crisp, small paper restoration to corner of half-title, a very good copy. Text in French. Beddie, 697.

First French edition of the first (and unauthorised) account of Cook’s first voyage, Journal of a voyage round the world in His Majesty’s Ship Endeavour (1771), translated by Anne François Fréville. More recent scholarship attributes authorship of the original to Magra, rather than to Banks, Solander or others. Journal of a voyage round the world preceded Hawkesworth’s official account by two years. This French edition includes two additional works not found in the English edition: Lettre de M. de Commerson (written by Bougainville’s naturalist) and Lettre de M. le B. de G., an anonymous letter concerning a putative Northwest Passage.

Copies are recorded in two Australian collections (National Library of Australia; State Library of New South Wales).
