$475.00 AUD
Sydney : Printed by D. Wall, 76 York Street, and published by J. Fowles, 5 Harrington Street, [1882?]. Quarto (280 x 215 mm), original dark green pebbled cloth (lightly marked, corners bumped), upper board lettered in gilt; pp. 88, with 40 lithographed plates; front hinge split, rear hinge cracked, but internally very clean throughout; small Webster Collection stamp to rear endpaper.
Fowles’ work is acknowledged as the first on Australian architecture. Originally issued in twenty fortnightly parts in 1848-49, it was also published in 1849 as a collective edition by Wall and Fowles (Ferguson, 4766). A facsimile edition was published in 1878 – the year of Fowles’ death – by Gibbs, Shallard & Co. (Ferguson, 9715). The present edition is an undated reprint by Wall and Fowles of the 1848 edition (cf. Ferguson, 9716). Note, however, that it contains 40 plates, whereas Ferguson calls for only 37, also mentioning another reprint by William Dymock issued around 1882.
