Two volumes in one, small octavo (165 mm), contemporary marbled papered boards (heavily rubbed, worn along edges and at corners), spine with the original green morocco title piece lettered and decorated in gilt (paper splits at spine ends and along outer hinges), all edges green, front free-endpaper with 19th-century ownership signature, pp xii, 250 (parts I-VII), [4 publisher’s advertisements], 1-318 (parts VIII-XVII); text in German; internally clean and bright throughout, binding firm, a good copy of the scarce first German edition in a contemporary binding.

The political journalist Louis Bastide (1805-1854) was imprisoned several times for his satirical works. In order to be able to pay his fines and legal fees, in 1838 he published his scathing attack on Napoleon’s chief diplomat, the scheming Catholic clergyman Talleyrand (1754-1838), soon after his death on 17 May. Entitled Vie religieuse et politique de Talleyrand-Périgord, it was quickly translated into German and published by Krieger in 1838-39. He also continued his attacks on the monarchy undaunted.
