Flanagan was an Irish journalist who emigrated to Sydney in 1840. He worked on a number of publications, including employment by Sir Henry Parkes, and wrote a series of articles on the Aborigines of Australia published posthumously in 1888. He began work on a History of New South Wales in the 1850s, taking the manuscript to London in 1860 where he died before it was published. His work covers the arrival of the early European explorers, British settlement and inland exploration, the consist system and its abandonment, war in New Zealand, separation of Port Phillip, indigenous affairs and the discovery of gold.
