Translation by E. Karavaeva of Australian polar explorer and scientist Douglas Mawson’s book The Home of the Blizzard (1915). This is the first Russian edition, printed in a run of 10,000 copies. Due to heightened Soviet interest in Arctic exploration and research in the mid 1930s, Mawson’s work on Antarctica, despite being already twenty years old, was considered of sufficient interest by the authorities to merit a translation. And yet, although the first Russian Antarctic expedition had been carried out by Bellingshausen and Lazarev in 1819-1821, it would not be until the mid 1950s that Soviet Antarctic research would commence in earnest. The edition includes a preface on the history of Antarctic exploration.
Trove locates a single copy in Australian collections (National Library of Australia).
