Nehemia Dov Hoffman was born in 1860 in Gavra, near Kovno. After spending time in New York he emigrated to South Africa, importing Hebrew type with him. He published the Jewish weekly ‘Der Afrikaner Israeli’, which folded after six months. The Jews in South Africa is one of the first histories of the Jewish population in that region, printed in Hebrew script.
