During 1896 Dr. W. G. Tayler, a medical practitioner, placed many notices in the Australian Town and Country Journal advertising his private “lying-in home” for ladies visiting Sydney at his residence “Etrenne”, 2 Queen Street, Woollahra. This was essentially a maternity home that provided support for pregnant women and girls who were nearing the birth of their child, and for new mothers. Perhaps it was to one such visitor that he presented this novel and rather astonishing piece of penmanship.

Provenance: Jane Emma Murphy (Balcombe) (1854–1924), “The Briars,” Mornington, Victoria; à Beckett family, Melbourne (by descent).
