Melbourne : George Robertson, 1869. First edition. Octavo (185 x 125 mm), original printed papered boards (some minor staining and light foxing); pp. xi, [1], 108; spotting to last few leaves and edges; a very good copy.

Scarce first edition of a collection of sixty-eight pithy and provocative essays by Clarke, originally published under this same nom de plume in the Australasian, which Clarke had joined as a staff writer in 1867. It was this popular newspaper column that really established Clarke’s reputation as a writer; many of these gems are wonderfully evocative of 1860s Melbourne, filled with Clarke’s incisive first-hand observations of streets and types.
