The Southern Skies Orrery
A handmade working orrery by master instrument maker Brian Greig, Melbourne, circa 1991, based on a design by W. S. Jones, London, early 19th century.
Melbourne : Souther Skies, circa 1991. Ebonised timber stand on three turned wooden legs, engraved circular zodiac plate, model spheres of the sun and the first six planets (to Saturn), the earth presented with its moon, beneath all of which is a mechanical gear box with eight brass gears and hand-driven crank. Accompanied by the maker’s instructional book ‘The clockwork of the heavens’, signed and dated by the instrument maker and editioned number 6.
Brian Greig is a master Australian scientific instrument maker who has made limited edition high quality orreries and other planetaria for private collectors and institutions such as the Sydney Observatory. His instruments are rare in the market.
