Three volumes, octavo, finely bound by the London firm of Root & Son in half crushed morocco over marbled papered boards, spines in compartments with gilt-lettering, ruled in gilt, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers (binder’s stamps verso), pp. xxvi; (2); large folding map (the folds reinforced with Japanese tissue), two full page maps; 411 (small pinhole to pp. 55 – 56); iii – xii (bound without the half-title, which was only issued in the second volume); 434, three full-page maps, 394, bound without advertisements; a few minimal pencil lines, else a fine, clean copy, collated and complete as described.
The third edition of Lewis and Clarke’s legendary expedition at the behest of President Thomas Jefferson across the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase to the Pacific coast. First published in Philadelphia in 1814, the first English edition was published the same year. The large folding map is considered the be the most accurate of the western portion of the United States until that date.
