PROUT, John Skinner (1805 - 1876)
View of the Blue Mountains, 1847
Watercolour on paper, laid on old card, 155 x 230 mm, very small areas of loss (3 x 8 mm; 2 x 15mm) to left and right edges from removal of old mount, signed J. Skinner Prout lower left and dated 1847.
John Skinner Prout was born in Plymouth in 1805 and emigrated to New South Wales in 1840 to pursue his career as a painter. He established a lithographic press in Sydney and made a number of expeditions across the Blue Mountains. In this charming watercolour the artist captures the vast natural beauty of the mountains, which frame a solitary figure dwarfed by the rocks around him.
