English clergyman John Henry Gray (1823-1890) was a consular chaplain at Canton (Guangzhou) and from 1868 until his death served as the inaugural Archdeacon of Hong Kong. He wrote several works on Chinese subjects, the most notable being China: a History of the Laws, Manners and Customs of the People (1878). His Walks in the city of Canton vividly brings to life Guangzhou of the 1870s. It provides a detailed survey of the city’s history and society, before offering the reader seven itineraries for walking tours, each covering different locations and sights.
