The distinguished Melbourne artist Keneth Jack (AM, MBE, RWS) did not become a professional painter until the early 1960s. This work was drawn by Jack in 1948 while studying for his Art Teachers Certificate at Caulfield Technical College. Jack is known for his detailed studies of scenes in Melbourne and regional Victoria. At the age of 24 he was commissioned to illustrate The Melbourne Book  by Clive Turnbull (Ure Smith, 1948), where this work is illustrated.
