The first edition of Bailey’s New Universal Etymological Dictionary appeared in 1755. Alston (Bibliography of the English Language) suggests a date of 1760 for this second, rather obscure edition. He suggests this edition is a variant of the first, but notes that ‘The revisions and additions are extensive enough to warrant this being regarded as a new work’.
