The first performed in the years 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771 ; the second in 1772, 1773, 1774 and 1775. For making discoveries in the northern hemisphere, by order of his majesty. Extracted from the quarto edition, in five volumes. Containing a relation of all the interesting transactions; including an abridgement of Captain Furneaux’s narrative of his proceedings during the separation of the two ships; to which is added a narrative of Commodore Phipp’s (now Lord Mulgrave) voyage to the North Pole; also an extract from Forster’s introduction to his history of northern discoveries on the progress of navigation.

Octavo, full tree calf (corners rubbed), flat-panelled spine ruled in gilt, contrasting Morocco title-label lettered in gilt (wear to head and foot of spine); armorial bookplate for Heineken to front free-endpaper, with the motto Si Deus pro nobis quis contra nos, early owner’s name Heineken dated 1822 to front free-endpaper; pp. viii, 448; frontispiece portrait of Omai, 8 leaves of plates; small loss to margin of pp. 5-6, small neat tear to margin and letters of pp. 229-32, one quire slightly sprung, else a very good copy.

A scarce early edition of Cook’s first and second voyages. 

The fourth edition is held in the SLV; the sixth edition (with 430 pages rather than 448), is SLNSW; the seventh edition (with 328 pages only) is held in the NLA.
