Dudecimo, later quarter calf over marbled papered boards, spine in compartments with gilt rule and contrasting title label lettered in gilt; front pastedown with two small labels, reading ‘Olim ex-Bibl. coll. Paris S.J. Sanctae Genovefae‘ (Formerly from the library of the Jesuit College of Paris Sainte-Geneviève), and ‘Sigill. Praep. Prov. Franc S.J.‘, respectively; title with woodcut Jesuit device, early annotation identifying the translator as Thomas Sailly, S.J., early ownership inscription of the Domus Provationis of the Society of Jesuits, Tournai, and (?nineteenth century) stamp in red of the École Sainte-Geneviève B.D.J.; pp. 165, [1]; contents clean and crisp, a fine example.

The French-language edition of the annual letter from Japan written by the Portuguese Jesuit missionary, Father Luís Fróis (or Froes),  sent from Arima in February 1588 and reporting on recent events in the country. At the end of the volume (pp.157-165) is also a brief extract from a communication addressed from China, 8 November, 1586, by Father Michele Ruggiero.

This edition was published in 1590 in Antwerp – a city which had been under Spanish Habsburg rule since 1585.
