Europe’s Gay Gateway. See wonderful Copenhagen via SAS
[Copenhagen : Scandinavian Airlines System, circa 1956]. Offset lithograph, 970 x 720 mm, printed lower left ‘Printed in Denmark – Interprint A/S Stosv 1860’, light handling marks, else fine.
A fabulously kitsch 1950s travel poster for the Danish capital, designed by Knud Lindhardt. The poster was issued in two sheets in mirror image, of which this is the lesser common variant, designed for display either singly or joined as a double sheet. It is listed in International Poster Annual, January 1, 1957, so likely issued in 1956. The popular song Wonderful Copenhagen was written by Frank Loesser for the 1952 film Hans Christian Andersen has become synonymous with tourism to the city and is now adopted by the official tourist bureau. Scandinavian Airlines System, or SAS, was founded in 1946 and is the main passenger airline in Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
