God’s Man. A novel in woodcuts
New York : Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, 1929. Second printing. Octavo, illustrated papered boards (edges slightly rubbed, small chip at foot of spine), label to spine, top edge stained black, others uncut, small marks to endpapers, unpaginated, the novel told entirely without words in a series of 139 full page woodcuts, one page with a repaired tear, a good copy.
Gods’ Man was the first American wordless novel, and is considered a precursor of the graphic novel, whose development it influenced. It tells the Faustian story of an artist who signs away his soul for a magic paintbrush.
