$100.00 AUD
Gelatin silver print photograph, 80 x 115 mm, verso with contemporary pencilled inscription in German 'N.G. 8 Leute von Waria'; fine.
The source of the Waria River, which flows through Oro and Morobe provinces, was discovered in 1910 by the Australian anthropologist Ernest Chinnery. This group portrait of 24 men – most likely Zia speakers from the lower Waria area – includes four members of the native Papuan constabulary.
