$2,750.00 AUD
[Macao?] : [s.n.], [1817?]. Small octavo, later half calf over marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt; title-leaf with early ownership inscription (chipped at bottom corner), the verso with the ex libris label of Mexican diplomat, soldier and historian José Gomez de la Cortina (Conde de la Cortina (III), 1799-1860); pp. 31, [1 blank]; fore-edge margin of last leaf expertly restored; clean throughout, a very good copy.
This rare pamphlet appears to have been issued in conjunction with the ceremony held in the Cathedral of the Nativity of Our Lady, Macao, on 7 May 1817, to commemorate the death of Dona Maria I of Portugal, who had died on 20 March 1816 after reigning for almost 40 years. It comprises the text of the funeral oration composed and delivered by Fr. Paulo a Santo Tomas de Aquino, who would serve as Archbishop of Cranganor (Angamala), India, from June 1819 until his death in December 1823.
Although the pamphlet has no imprint, it does seem likely that it was printed in Macao at the time of Fr. Aquino’s oration, rather than in Lisbon, given the very specific information in the title that links it to the ceremony in the Cathedral on 7 May 1817, and the paucity of extant examples – there is no copy, for example, in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal.
OCLC locates a single copy (University of Torino); another copy traced in the Catálogo Coletivo de Bibliotecas (CCB) de las Azores.
