Madras : printed and published by P. R. Hunt, at the American Mission Press for the American Madura Mission, 1862. Third edition. Duodecimo, original publisher’s printed silk-bound flush-cut cards (lightly marked), spine with handwritten title Telugu text (in error, as this text is in Tamil – another major Dravidian language – but indeed a catechism in Telugu was also published); presentation inscription to front free-endpaper ‘Mr. Charles Ellis, Uxbridge, from W. B. Capron, Tirupuvanam, So. India, Amer. Madura Mission Nov 10, 1863’, deaccession wet stamp from Harvard College Library to front pastedown; text to frontispiece in English by Henry M. Scudder, introducing the volume as ‘a Comprehensive Catechism, composed in Tamil, to meet the wants of native congregations’; title-leaf, 96 leaves printed in Tamil script; occasional light foxing, otherwise internally clean, a very good copy.

The American Madura Mission (AMM) was a Protestant missionary initiative established in Madura (now Madurai), India, in 1834 by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM). It was the first Protestant mission in this region.
