Three volumes, complete, quarto, publisher’s half leather over buckram, edges rubbed and a little marked, gilt emblems to upper boards, gilt lettered on spine, marbled endpapers, colour frontispieces; pp. 400; (5); 390; (5); 502; (3), extensively illustrated with black and white photographs, a very good set.

A scarce complete set of this monumental history of British India from pre-colonial days to the present, focussing chiefly on key figures of the British Raj, including civil servants, administrators, traders and business people, the clergy and the army. It incorporates chapters on the history and commerce of Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, Karachi, Rangoon, Chittagong, the states of Mysore and Hyderabad, and discussion of the tea, cotton, jute, industries, amongst others. Chapters are dedicated to the Roman Catholic Church, Scottish Church, Church of England and Armenian Churches in India. The invaluable biographical entries are illustrated with several hundred portrait photographs.
