Bagguley of Newcastle-under-Lyme in a ‘Sutherland binding’ (so-named after his employer and patron, the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland), full crushed morocco with decorative gilt rules and contrasting morocco inlay, spine in compartments with raised bands, lettered in gilt with gilt ornamentation, edges lightly rubbed, full vellum doublures with elaborate gilt-ruled panels (the lower panel lifting slightly), the doublures with contrasting morocco floriated leather inlays, and gilt rule, silk free endpapers (the lower endpaper a little silverfished), all edges gilt, pp. xxx; [31 – 33]; 34 – 190, wood engraved illustrations, a very good, to fine copy.
A magnificently bound copy of the poems of Anglo-Irish writer Oliver Goldsmith in a rare ‘Sutherland binding’ by the firm of Bagguley, with their distinctively restrained panelled exterior and vibrant and expressive decorated gilt doublures. Bagguley bindings are rarely offered for sale.
