Following her degree in education, Laura Miller (1905 – 1993) graduated from Jefferson School of Law and was admitted to the Kentucky Court of Appeals in 1936. In 1944 she successfully defended Private Walter H. Finn against capital charges of rape in a court-martial, and in doing so, became the first woman to defend a court-martial case in the United States Army. The same year she married Major Stephen Arthur Derry. Laura Miller Derry held many appointments of significance including as observer to the United Nations and President of the National Association of Women Lawyers.
