View of the Market Square, Geelong, Victoria late 1860s.
$150.00 AUD
Stereoscopic albumen print photograph, each image approximately 82 x 82 mm (arch-top format), on original yellow card mount, 84 x 173 mm; the verso has a mounted label with the word ‘Geelong’ and a double border in gold (it is evident that this has been cut from a larger label); light surface marks to the prints and the mount.
The photographer of this view, which shows wagons and traders in Geelong’s Market Square, is unidentified; however, a likely candidate is Thomas Jeston Washbourne, a Geelong-based travelling photographer who produced a series of stereoscopic photographs, including views of Geelong and the Western District, around 1869. The trimmed label on the verso could prove to be either a vital clue or a red herring!
