Folio, finely bound in full crushed blue morocco by Canape R.D., filed in gilt with ornamental gilt corner pieces, spine in compartments with raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt, slightly rubbed at edges, ruled gilt dentelles with ornamental detail, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, the original chromolithograph wrappers bound in, gilt-lettered morocco bookplate for Francis Ketteneh (offset to following page), pp. xii; 212; (4), the ‘Edition de Grand Luxe) of 200 copies, this being one of 100 copies on Whatman paper, with a fine original watercolour by Maurice Leloir to the half-title, signed and dated 1884, illustrated with 12 full page photogravure plates, and 220 vignette illustrations after Leloir, the duplicate set of plates in bister bound in en-suite, a lavish and luxurious presentation.
Maurice Leloir (1853 – 1940) was a French illustrator, watercolourist, draftsman, printmaker, writer and collector, highly regarded for his illustrated publications of seventeenth and eighteenth century literature.
