Manuscript in ink, 2 pp, single quarto sheet (250 x 200 mm); written in a scrawly though legible hand; old horizontal and vertical folds, in very good condition.

Provenance: Found among papers associated with the family of John Mickle Lyall (1869-1925) of Harewood House, Koo-Wee-Rup, Westernport, south of Melbourne. John was the son of Westernport pioneer William Lyall (1821-1888) and Annabella (Brown) Lyall (1826-1916).

We have tentatively attributed this manuscript to John Mickle Lyall’s oldest child, Harewood Lyall (b. 1899), as he would have been about the right age to have been the creator of this “cheat sheet” for dance steps around the time the fox trot came into vogue (after 1914). It was most definitely written by someone for whom dancing did not come naturally!
