Small octavo, contemporary half blue morocco over marbled papered boards, 240 pp, illustrated with [4] steel-engraved plates, scattered foxing and browning (particularly to the plates), a small faint damp stain at bottom centre margin of first 50 pages, otherwise a good copy. Text in German in Fraktur.

A work of fiction for children which recounts the voyage of an English convict to the penal colony in New South Wales, as told through the diary of the ship’s doctor. Daily life in Sydney is described in great detail, and the narrative includes encounters with Aborigines and hunting game in the bush. An earlier version, also published in Leipzig, appeared in 1832, with the pseudonymous authorship of Peter Cunningham, Surgeon, R. N.
