Albumen print photograph, cabinet card format, 165 x 110 mm, with the full autograph signature of the actress as ‘Madge Kendal’ written in ink in the lower margin recto; verso with the imprint of Elliott & Fry, 55 Baker Street, London, and a neat inscription in pencil ‘Mrs Kendal’; in very good condition.

English actress Dame Madge Kendal (born Margaret Shafto Robertson; 1848 – 1935) was a star of the Victorian and Edwardian stage, renowned for her Shakespearean roles. She married the actor W. H. Kendal in 1869, and the couple managed the St James’s Theatre, London, from 1879-1888. She was made a Dame Grand Cross of the British Empire in 1927.
