[Melbourne : the artist, 1987]. Complete suite of nineteen copperplate photogravures, printed in an edition of 10; 195 x 295 mm (plate size), 370 x 460 mm (sheet size); all untitled, but signed and dated in the plate l.r. ‘Robert Ashton 1987’, and numbered at l.l. 1/10 (4), 2/10 (3), 3/10 (2), 4/10 (2), 5/10 (2), and 6/10 (2), with the four unnumbered examples being artist’s proofs; very fine, loosely housed in a custom handmade protective box.

Acclaimed photographer Robert Ashton’s 1987 series of copperplate photogravures were produced from his own photographs, most of them taken in the instantly recognisable locale of Melbourne’s Port Phillip Bay foreshore that stretches from St. Kilda around to Port Melbourne, some on Victoria’s west coast. The images have a consistently dark tonality and ominous mood, and even in those which are visually playful (Ashton delights in the incongruous element, the influence of Cartier-Bresson undeniable) we are drawn to something beyond the present moment: in the physical realm, it can be a reminder of the limitlessness of nature; in the temporal, a sudden sensing of the eternal.

ROBERT ASHTON studied photography in the 1970s at Prahran College under Paul Cox and Athol Shmith, and first exhibited his work at Brummels Gallery of Photography (Australia’s first gallery devoted specifically to photography) in 1973. Since that time he has been exhibiting continuously and has work held in many of the public collections in Australia including the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of NSW and the National Gallery of Australia. His work is also held in private collections in USA and Europe. His main area of practice has been in landscape and particularly the local landscape along the west coast of Victoria, where he has been living since 1982. His work embraces a range of photographic mediums from digital to large format analogue, in particular photogravure printing and more recently wetplate collodion.
