Octavo (215 x 140 mm), original red cloth with black lettering to spine, in the publisher’s orange dust jacket with black type (fine and bright); front free-endpaper with early ownership signature, title page signed in black ink by the author Miles Franklin, pp. 500;  spotting to edges, moderate foxing to preliminaries and first and last few leaves of text, else clean throughout; a desirable signed copy of the first edition.

All that swagger is based on the experience of Franklin’s own forebears who emigrated from Ireland and settled in the Monaro district of New South Wales in the mid-nineteenth century. The novel was awarded the S. H. Prior Memorial Prize in 1936.
