A superb portrait of Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904), Welsh-American explorer, journalist and colonial administrator, taken in Cape Town by J. E. Bruton in the mid 1880s. Stanley made four expeditions in Central Africa between 1871 and 1889, during which he charted much of the region’s interior and searched for the sources of the Nile and Congo rivers, but he is most famous for finding missionary and explorer David Livingstone at Ujiji near Lake Tanganyika in November 1871.
