[1877-78]. Albumen print photograph, 150 x 205 mm, laid down on original card mount, 245 x 300 mm, recto with printed caption beneath image: ‘The Benevolent Asylum’; verso with imprint of ‘Anglo-Australian Photographic Company. N.J. Caire, Photo., No. 2 Sherwood Street, Richmond’, and series title and number ‘The Public Buildings of Melbourne and Suburbs. No. 10. The Benevolent Asylum’, followed by a paragraph of printed text: ‘This noble institution was erected in the year 1854, at a cost of £54,000. It is situated at the northern extremity of Victoria Street, Hotham, and occupies a plot of ground neasuring 10 acres. The number of inmates at present is 634, comprising mostly the aged and decrepid of sexes. The annual cost of this establishment for maintenance is £12,000. Mr. McCutcheon is the Superintendent’; the albumen print in good condition with a few tiny spots of foxing; the margins of the mount with some light marks, otherwise fine.
