Large folio, full plum crushed Morocco, lettered in gilt, elaborately tooled in blind, corners rubbed, boards slightly bowed, all edges gilt, lithographed title page by Sands & McDougall, light stain to fore edge of text block, thirteen wood-engraved plates (including four by Samuel Calvert) after paintings by T. W. Roberts (two plates), J. W. Curtis (two plates), Henry Rielly, John Gully, W. Ford, J. R. Ashton, C. D. Richardson, Malcom Campbell, Eliza Parsons, and Chester Fields. Richardson’s plate illustrates the poem ‘A band of fierce and fantastic savages …’ where a settler is surrounded by a tribe of warrior Aborigines. An important Victorian poem by Kendall, illustrated by notable artists including the young twenty- five year old Tom Roberts, these some of his earliest works commissioned for publication.
