Dowling holds a special place in the history of Australian art, as the first artist to be be trained in Australia and was renowned for his paintings of pastoralists, indigenous people and biblical themes. This is the first major exhibition of his work. Published in conjunction with the National Gallery of Australia’s travelling exhibition Robert Dowling: Tasmanian son of Empire.
