Swiss-born painter Sali Herman (1898–1993) arrived in Melbourne in 1937 to escape rising anti-Semitism in Europe. Her studied at George Bell’s art school in Melbourne in 1937-38, Bell’s friendship and guidance evidently a lasting influence on the emigree artist.
