London : Chatto & Windus, 1998. First edition. Octavo, publisher’s black cloth with silver-lettered spine in pictorial dust jacket; front pastedown with ex libris of Felix Dennis (1947-2014), editor of London Oz, publisher and later media tycoon; a presentation copy with a highly significant association, inscribed on the title page by Geoffrey Robertson for Dennis: ‘To Felix, With all good wishes & many (retrospectively) happy memories. Yours ever, Geoff’; pp. xiv, 415, with b/w photographic illustrations; a fine copy, with loosely inserted ‘With compliments’ slip of Robertson’s law firm Doughty Street Chambers.

London-based Australian barrister Geoffrey Barrister acted as defence counsel for Oz magazine during its criminal trials in 1971, when Dennis, along with co-editors Richard Neville, and Jim Anderson, were prosecuted for obscenity. The three were convicted and given sentences ranging from nine to fifteen months, but released on appeal, the trial judge being severely reprimanded for misdirecting the jury. Robertson devotes one of the chapters in The justice game to the Oz trials.
