Albumen print photograph with hand colouring, 102 x 63 mm (mount); verso with back mark of ‘S. Spurling, Photographer, Hobart Town. Prize Medallist, for Portraiture, Intercolonial Exhibition, Melbourne, 1866’, and a fully contemporary inscription in pencil: ‘Miss M. Robertson, Tasmania / 1868’; some very pale foxing to the print and the mount.

The elegant sitter may possibly be Margaret Robertson, daughter of wealthy Launceston merchant James Robertson (1800-1874). In 1870 she married the eminent Melbourne surgeon (Sir) Thomas Naghten FitzGerald (1838-1908).
